Forklift Truck Training Program
Operators have to undergo training on an industrial-powered forklift, or lift truck to receive forklift driver certification. The training course must be specific to the forklift type and attachments that you would be using on the job. Training must also reflect the environment in which you will be working. Forklift safety should be a main concern for both the trainer and the operator trainee.
General Qualifications
Before assuming any operator duties, all forklift drivers should undergo training and certification. Basic qualifications for operating a forklift include being at least eighteen years old and the physical capacity to control and operate the unit safely.
Pedestrian Safety
The top concern of any forklift operator should be the safety of pedestrians. Pedestrians in the vicinity of the forklift are at risk of injury or death from getting hit by the machinery or its attachments. Pedestrians always have the right of way, and forklift operators must honk their horns when working at crosswalks or intersections or near pedestrians.
Weather Conditions
Forklift accidents frequently occur on loading docks. These places become dangerous if rain leaks in through open dock doors making the floor extremely slippery. Wet floor conditions create a hazard and operators need to be aware of potential hazards when working in loading dock areas.
Certification
Forklift certification programs consist of a combination of classroom instruction and practical training tailored to the specific needs of the workplace. Training must be completed on the type of forklift and attachments which would be utilized by the trainee in the workplace.
Mishaps
On average, there is about one hundred deaths attributed to forklift mishaps, while over 100,000 are injured by forklifts. The majority of these accidents could be prevented with attention to safety and proper operator training.

Telescopic Forklifts
Telescopic forklift models are equipped with a pronged lift on an arm which extends over the top of the truck offering great height and versatility. The arm, or crane, is called a telescopic boom. The boom allows the operator to raise the cargo to great heights while maintaining a high degree of control. Regular forklifts aren't able to move the load towards and away from the forklift cab, whereas a telescopic forklift can allow that movement. The telescopic forklift is usually used in both construction and agriculture. It is better for applications where greater lift and control is needed.
A forklift carton clamp attachments are better in cases requiring high volume carton handling. The attachment has arm pads with four way reversible rubber linings which enable the operator to utilize uniform clamping force when picking up a load. It comes with a backrest which protects the loads from damage.
A slip sheet attachment fits onto a slip sheet forklift. It is used for storing systems which don't utilize pallets. The attachment clamps onto the slip sheet and pulls it onto the forks on the forklift. This type of system is handy for intra-corporate deliveries and for overseas shipments.
A lift platform which is designed to raise staff is known as a Man Basket. It attaches to the forks on the forklift and a strap or chain is utilized to attach the basket to the forklift carriage. The platform has railings to protect the personnel from falling to the ground. Brackets on the platform are utilized for fastening the safety harness of the worker.
